SFNZ National Submission to the Government Inquiry into Mental Health and Addictions Services 2018

Executive Summary
Our recommendation to the Inquiry team is that there needs to be fundamental shift in approach to the provision of mental health and addiction services in New Zealand. Family and whānau provide the majority of care and support to their loved ones affected by mental illness and addictions. In our experience their expertise and knowledge is often disregarded or worse discounted. Seldom are whānau are accepted as equals and included as part of the team. We strongly suggest that addressing this imbalance will lead to improved outcomes for all those accessing support.
